27th July 2016
Location: 37 Eastcliffe Road Par PL24 2AH
As part of Par Bay Big Local Growing Project we have leased a derelict plot of 300 sq metres in the centre of Par to create a community garden. The plot was a derelict eyesore and we are turning it into a welcoming space to grow vegetables and flowers, for the community to come and sit, lend a hand or experiment and which will allow us to offer outdoor activities to complement those planned for the community hub across the road. The produce grown will be used in the community hub café where we will be promoting healthy eating, while we will also have a weekly produce stall at the entrance.
The site has fruitful apple trees and a lot of potential. A group of volunteers has made a start on clearing and levelling the ground and wheelchair accessible paths have been laid. Raised beds will be installed soon as well as a sensory garden with a community shelter and seating. The garden will be fully accessible via a simple path network and a space will be available for gardening demonstrations, natural crafts and similar events. Bee and butterfly friendly plants will encourage insects while interpretation boards will showcase plants/wildlife in the garden. We will have wildlife cameras to capture night-time visitors.
The intention is that the groups who have been awarded funding over the past year years will make a contribution to the success of the garden. Another aim is to assist groups in developing their own growing projects
